Mali Ancestors

Pair of Mali Ancestral figures

Mali  West Africa

Wood, shells, textiles

54 cm

These charming figures were collected in the Ivory Coast between 1994 and 1998 by Philippe Marie-Saint.

They represent the respect given to people after they have died.  Representations are made and people talk to them, ask for advice and look after them by washing their clothes, etc.

These figures are dressed in the traditional hand loomed Mali blue cotton as the bodies of those they represented were. This cotton was once prevalent and was woven in narrow strips on small hand looms, sewn together and dyed the distinctive blue. Recently,  imports of machined cotton have made the traditional blue a rarity.

Price: $480 AUD for the pair with custom steel mount
