Ivory Figure - SOLD Lega, Democratic Republic of the Congo Ivory 12 cm estimated to be c1900 this finely carved figure from the Lega people of East Africa. A superbly stylised face with circular marks on the body with very glossy and dark patina. This work demonstrates with great simplicity the Lega aesthetic and sense of design. Most Lega art is small and personal enabling Bwami society instructors to hold pieces in their hands and use them as mnemonic devised. Because a particular object can be linked to several lessons, it is impossible to determine an object's precise meaning. The simplicity, strength and abstract nature of Lega sculptures have long attracted the attention of the Western art world. Collected by Ozmosis in Kenya
