Ivory Coast Headdress

Ivory Coast Headdress

Ivory Coast Africa

Wood, beads, shells, mirror, gourd, clay, cane

45 x 36 cm

A beautifully carved and pigmented wooden head with a double string necklace of yellow and green beads surmounts a base consisting of a gourd decorated with a central mirror surrounded by several strings of red and green beads and shell motifs.

These were worn on the head with the body hidden under a piece of material or under a garment made of straw.  The mask wearer must not be identified because only the spirit of the mask is paramount.   Headdresses and masks were worn for a variety of festivities.

This head dress was collected in the Ivory Coast between 1994 and 1998 by Philippe Marie-Saint.
