Antique
Chest in Red Lacquer
19th century
China. Shang Xi province
Width 73.5, Height
37,
Depth 46 cm
Elm,
Red Lacquer, Bronze
A
well preserved, original patina of red Chinese lacquer that has congealed
with age into almost symmetrical dots gives this old storage chest its own
provenance of age.
Even the Chinese can't fake this finish which only time has wrought.
The Elm is in very good condition and the old lacquer finish is stable.
The chest is immaculate inside.
Some shrinkage is understandably apparent across the panels that form the
top and the base which have been doweled together.
The four vertical corners are finely dovetailed.
As with all but the priceless Chinese antiques the hardware is not totally
original but there is evidence of considerable rust in most of the fixings
indicating that they have never been changed.
