Elm
A
well preserved and superbly crafted example of 19th century Chinese
joinery.
Originally used as a sprung stool, it's in good, solid condition with a glossy, old patina.
In keeping with a design that evolved over centuries this piece relies on
line and proportion like the carved, delicate waist below the top. The top
consists of a carved floating panel inserted into a mitred frame.
A raised carving accentuates every opening.
The stretchers are stepped. The structural members of the longer sides are
subtlety bowed along their length and create
the illusion of 'stretch' when contrasted with the flat top.
The legs terminate in elegant horse hoofs.
The attention to detail is complimented by the strong elements of the figure in the
selected Elm timbers.
