Brass and Glass Bead Neckpiece Côte d'Ivoire area (formerly Upper Volta) Niger Beautifully crafted flat brass hand cut metal discs spaced with black glass beads. These were made using the lost wax method by the Baoule tribe, prolific producers of brass ornaments and charms. The Baoule people are the original descendants of the Ashanti tribes of Ghana. Records tell that during the C18th, Queen Abla Poku led her people west to the shores of Cornoe. There she sacrificed her son in order to cross the river. This sacrifice is understood to be the origin of the name Baoule, meaning ‘the child has died’. AUD$220 |
